I write quite a bit about marriage, but in some relationships, your best efforts won’t always work to change your situation. The things I write about usually work, but only if your spouse is emotionally stable and has his or her baggage reasonably balanced and under control. If that baggage is not under control, you and your spouse likely need intervention and support. It is the old, unaddressed baggage that almost always discourages communication and, unfortunately, has the potential to ruin relationships.

If you think this advice just will not work in your relationship, you probably also don’t feel like you have adequate give and take in that relationship. It might be a sign that you are in an abusive relationship. If you suspect that could be true, please read the post, “How Can I Tell If I Am in an Abusive Relationship?”
