I am standing in an open doorway,
a winter’s night about to overtake me.
The sun has just slipped beyond the mountains,
and I am alone with the approaching quiet.
Tomorrow is a stranger without a face, and
I don’t know yet if my memories will sustain me.
In my desolation, a scene opens up,
more of a dream than a vision.
It is a portrait of Spring, a great valley of color.
It is there waiting for me, on the other side of
a blinding darkness.
