Words

We swim in an ocean of words,
but are as dull to their essence
as fish to water.

Gliding over the surface,
we are unaware of the
life and movement beneath us.

Or searching the night sky,
we are the lost captain who
trembles at the gunwhale after
dropping his sextant over the starboard bow.

May it be said “Soul overboard!” and may you
be found swimming for all your life
in the fervent sea of plight and meaning.
